DKD - Calibrations for Industry

Correct and reliable measurements are a prerequisite for any high-quality industrial production. Measurements thus are an important part of industrial quality assurance.

This is true in particular in view of the international standards for quality management systems (EN ISO 9000), but also in connection with the requirements in the fields of product liability and environmental protection.

Based on the requirements specified in the standard, it follows that measuring instruments must be calibrated, i. e. that the deviation of the indication of a measuring instrument from the correct value is known.

In addition, test results are reliable only if they have been determined with calibrated measuring instruments.

Calibration hierarchy from the national standard to the product

The PTB alone is not in a position to cover the enormous demand for calibrations in the industry and the testing sector. This is why the Deutscher Kalibrierdienst (DKD, German Calibration Service) was founded in 1977 as a joint task of State and Industry.

The PTB remains responsible for calibrations at the highest level, while the extensive calibration work for industry is carried out by competent laboratories of the economic sector and of public institutions, whose technical competence has been formally confirmed by the DKD accreditation body on the basis of an assessment.
